Special counsel Jack Smith is appealing the dismissal of the classified documents case against Donald Trump by a judge last month. The case was thrown out after the judge deemed Smith’s appointment unconstitutional. Smith’s team argues that the decision goes against longstanding appointment practices within the Department of Justice and the government. The appeal has been made to the 11th US circuit court of appeals, but a trial is unlikely to happen before the November presidential election, giving Trump the chance to appoint an attorney general who may dismiss the case if elected. Five Secret Service agents have been placed on leave following a failed assassination attempt on Trump in July, where a gunman opened fire at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump was wounded but survived, while one person was killed and two others injured. In another development, former Republican staffers who have worked for George W. Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney have endorsed vice-president Kamala Harris for president, highlighting concerns over Trump’s leadership and democratic values. Former Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard has endorsed Trump for president, citing his understanding of the responsibilities of the role and his efforts in diplomacy during his first term. Additionally, Trump has pledged to create a “Space National Guard” if re-elected, building on his previous establishment of the Space Force in 2019.
