Biden adviser meets with high-ranking Chinese military official in ‘unusual’ talks | Political News

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Chinese General Zhang Youxia met in Beijing to discuss a range of issues and attempt to defuse tensions between the two superpowers. The talks focused on topics such as stability in the Taiwan Strait, the South China Sea, Russia’s defense industry, and the situation in Gaza. Zhang emphasized that Taiwan’s independence was a red line for China and demanded that the US stop military collaboration and arms sales to Taiwan.

Despite the disagreements, both sides agreed to arrange more direct military talks in the future. Sullivan also met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who expressed his commitment to stable relations with the US and hoped for cooperation between the two countries. The talks also touched on the possibility of a meeting between President Biden and President Xi, addressing topics such as trade, the Middle East, and territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

The US reaffirmed its commitment to defending its allies in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in light of China’s actions in the South China Sea. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned the US against undermining China’s sovereignty and supporting the actions of countries like the Philippines.

Efforts at closer cooperation between the US and China come after a period of strained relations, including China suspending military communication after a visit to Taiwan by US lawmaker Nancy Pelosi. The talks aim to de-escalate tensions and find common ground on various issues affecting the two nations.
