Fourth death in one month at Grand Canyon National Park as 80-year-old man dies in boat accident

An 80-year-old man visiting Grand Canyon National Park died after his boat flipped in the Colorado River near Fossil Rapid on Sunday. Despite efforts from the group and park rangers, resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. The man’s identity has not been released, and his death is under investigation. This marks the fourth fatality at the park this month alone. Additionally, the body of Chenoa Nickerson was found by a commercial river trip, nearly 20 miles from where she was reported missing following a flash flood in Havasu Canyon. Another fatality occurred in early August when the body of 20-year-old Leticia A. Castillo was found 150 feet below Twin Overlooks along Desert View Drive after she entered the Grand Canyon around Aug. 3. The cause of her death is unclear. On Aug. 1, an unnamed man died after attempting a BASE jump from Yavapai Point on the South Rim. His body was found 500 feet below the rim with a deployed parachute. The park service and Coconino County Medical Examiner are investigating all of these tragic events.
