The Kentucky State Police (KSP) has announced a new pilot program in five counties to make it easier for young Kentuckians to obtain their driver’s license. The program, launching next week in Barren, Grant, Marion, Oldham, and Perry counties, will provide skills tests for applicants ages 18 and under who wish to obtain their intermediate license.
This initiative comes after the passing of legislation earlier this year to assist Kentuckians in counties without a full-time Driver License Regional Office. The program aims to reduce travel time and mileage for teen permit holders and their families, who would otherwise have to travel to surrounding counties for testing.
Appointments for the skills tests will be required and can be scheduled through KSP’s online system. The initial pilot program locations include Barren, Grant, Marion, Oldham, and Perry counties. The program is set to operate until June 30, 2026, unless extended by the General Assembly and Governor.
Governor Beshear emphasized the importance of equipping teen drivers with safe driving skills to create a safer Kentucky for all. KSP Driver Testing Commander, Capt. Chris Baker, stated that the goal of the pilot program is to provide enhanced services and greater testing accessibility for Kentuckians across the state.
This program will allow young drivers in these counties to access regional testing, reducing disruptions to school and work while ensuring they have the necessary skills to navigate the road safely. Locations for the pilot program will continue to be monitored and adjusted based on demand.
