NIKA Project Space is set to open its new Paris outpost in the Komunuma arts district with an exhibition by Palestinian artist Mirna Bamieh. Titled ‘Sour Things’, the show reflects on themes of memory production and loss, particularly focusing on food cultures. Bamieh, who comes from a background in culinary arts, uses fermentation and ceramics to explore displacement, uprooting, and grief, particularly in relation to the Palestinian experience of war and displacement.
In an interview, Bamieh discusses her fascination with food cultures and recipes as tools of resistance, as well as the importance of revitalizing disappearing food cultures. She also shares how her Palestinian and Lebanese background influenced her desire to tell stories and bring life to these cultures. The artist explains how fermentation, which she became more interested in during the Covid pandemic, plays a significant role in her work, linking to broader themes of disappearance, memory, and transformation.
‘Sour Things’ is a deeply personal exhibition for Bamieh, reflecting her experiences of moving out of her country, witnessing war, and being separated from her family. The pieces in the show have helped her process trauma and understand her own journey. The exhibition will run from September 8 to October 27, 2024, at NIKA Project Space in Paris, with a solo booth of the artist’s work also set to be presented at Asia Now in October.
