Taiwan military assesses that China lacks capability for invasion, considers alternative strategies

Taiwan’s defense ministry has stated that China does not have the full capabilities to invade Taiwan, but is ramping up pressure through the development of advanced weapons and other tactics, such as inspecting foreign cargo ships. China considers Taiwan as its own territory and has not ruled out the use of force to bring it under its control. The government of Taiwan, established after the Republic of China’s defeat in a civil war with the communists in 1949, has no formal peace treaty with China. The defense ministry noted in its annual threat assessment that China is improving joint command operations skills, developing new weapons like hypersonic missiles, and increasing nuclear warheads. In May, China staged war games around Taiwan and conducted interception and inspection drills off its east coast. China’s aim is to practice blockade tactics and boarding foreign cargo ships. Taiwan has been increasing its defense spending to deter China’s aggression, with President Lai calling for national unity and self-defense capabilities to protect the country. Despite offers for talks, China views Taiwan’s governing party as promoting independence and has warned against provocation. The Taiwanese president stresses that peace through strength is essential for national security.
