A string of towns along Romania’s eastern coast, including Agigea, Tuzla, Costinesti, Eforie, Mangalia, and Vama Veche, have experienced significant property damage due to extensive flooding caused by torrential rain. Hundreds of homes have been flooded, many streets are submerged, and tourists in Venus found their cars full of water. Vama Veche currently lacks electricity, and a cleanup operation is underway to repair the beach. Despite the damage, there have been no reports of casualties. Over 800 calls were made to firefighters for help, and crews have been working in 15 districts heavily impacted by flooding. Meteorologists attribute the downpours to a stationary cyclone storm system over the Black Sea, which is rare and typically occurs only once or twice a year. A code orange rain warning will remain in place until Sunday, with the south of Constanta county expected to see the highest level of flooding. The cyclone is expected to move south towards Greece and Turkey in the coming days. Residents describe the storm as a “Biblical flood,” with one local recalling a powerful rainstorm that limited visibility to just one metre. Local authorities and emergency services are working to support those affected and manage the aftermath of the flooding.
