Iraq to impose two-day curfew for first census in decades for census purposes

Iraq has announced that it will be imposing a two-day curfew in November for the country’s first census in 27 years. The last general census was held in 1997 in 15 provinces, excluding the three northern provinces of the Kurdistan region. The census has been postponed several times in the past due to security concerns, with tensions over disputed territories causing a delay in 2010. Despite recent stability, Iraq has faced decades of conflict and violence, making the upcoming census a crucial step in gathering accurate demographic information for effective policymaking and promoting inclusive growth. The country’s population is estimated to be around 43 million. The census will receive support from various ministries and the Kurdistan Regional Government, with training provided for statistical staff. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has partnered with Iraqi authorities for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of the census in providing essential data for the country. The process will involve collecting information on the population, including demographic characteristics and household data. The curfew will be implemented to ensure the safety and security of all those involved in conducting the census.
