Political leaders from the United States and around the world expressed condolences and outrage after the bodies of six hostages, including American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, were recovered by the Israeli Defense Forces. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris called Hamas “terrorists” and vowed that they would pay for their crimes. Former President Donald Trump blamed the deaths on the current administration, while members of Congress focused on condemning Hamas and calling for the release of all hostages. The White House had been working on a cease-fire proposal to secure the hostages’ release but negotiations had not been successful. World leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, called for an immediate end to the war in Gaza and the release of all hostages. Thousands of Israelis protested in Tel Aviv for a hostage deal, while politicians continued to press for the safe return of the remaining hostages. The deaths of over 1,200 people in Israel and the taking of hostages during the Oct. 7 terrorist attack by Hamas have sparked global condemnation and calls for action against the terrorist organization.
