US seizes President Maduro’s plane for violating sanctions, according to US authorities | Nicolas Maduro updates

The US Justice Department has seized a $13 million aircraft allegedly bought for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in violation of sanctions. The Dassault Falcon 900EX was seized in the Dominican Republic and brought to Florida. It was illegally purchased through a shell company and smuggled out of the US, violating sanctions imposed in 2019. The plane was used to transport Maduro on foreign visits and has flown almost exclusively to and from a military base in Venezuela.

The US has been increasing pressure on Maduro’s government following contested elections in July. Previous sanctions imposed under former President Donald Trump aimed to destabilize Maduro, who succeeded socialist President Hugo Chavez in 2013. The Biden administration had relaxed some sanctions to encourage free and fair elections, but many were reimposed due to allegations of violations.

At least 27 people have died and 192 have been wounded in protests following the elections. The seizure of the plane has been linked to election tampering and repression by Maduro’s government. The White House National Security Council stated that the seizure is meant to hold Maduro accountable for misgoverning Venezuela. Maduro has not yet publicly responded to the incident, but has criticized the US’s involvement in Venezuela. Despite his claims of victory in the elections, opposition leaders and international organizations have raised doubts about the results. The EU has rejected the election outcome, while Washington has recognized opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez as the victor.
