Department of Justice investigating reports of sexual abuse at women’s prisons in California

The U.S. Department of Justice announced the opening of an investigation into allegations of systematic sexual abuse of incarcerated women at two state-run California prisons, the Central California Women’s Facility and the California Institution for Women. The investigation was prompted by numerous private lawsuits over the past two years alleging rape and sexual abuse of women at these facilities. The correctional officers at these prisons are accused of groping, raping, and coercing women into sexual acts, as well as seeking sexual favors in exchange for privileges. The Justice Department also mentioned that some of the accused individuals are responsible for handling sexual abuse complaints within the facilities. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation stated that it does not tolerate sexual abuse in prisons and welcomes the investigation. The closure of a women’s prison in Northern California known as the “rape club” was also announced earlier due to significant sexual abuse by correctional officers. The Assistant Attorney General of the Justice Department emphasized that no incarcerated woman should be subjected to sexual abuse by prison staff. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Secretary reiterated that sexual assault is a violation of human dignity not tolerated within the state prison system. For those who have experienced sexual assault, they can contact the National Sexual Assault Telephone Hotline or access the RAINN online chat service for support.
