Former President Donald Trump’s federal trial for his attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election through spreading false claims of mass voter fraud has not yet been scheduled. The case has been slow-moving due to Trump’s appeal to the Supreme Court, which resulted in the issue being returned to a lower court. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan emphasized that the 2024 election will not determine the case schedule and that appellate issues are causing delays. The latest indictment against Trump removed some evidence after the Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity. Trump’s attorney plans to challenge the indictment and prosecutor Robert Smith’s appointment. A Trump-appointed federal judge in Florida declared Smith illegitimately appointed in a separate case. Trump continues to spread false information about the election, despite numerous convictions related to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Over 1,400 individuals have been charged, with more than 1,000 convictions. Trump faces charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy against rights. Chutkan has not set a trial date, taking into account all arguments before issuing a schedule.
