Trump and Harris campaigns reach agreement on rules for upcoming ABC debate

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have agreed to debate each other in Philadelphia next week following tense negotiations over the ground rules. The event will use the same format as the prior debate between Trump and President Joe Biden, with candidate microphones muted when it is not their turn to speak. Trump has expressed willingness to let Harris talk during the debate and stated that his strategy will depend on the perceived fairness of ABC News. Both campaigns have accepted the rules proposed by ABC, even though the Harris campaign believes she will be at a disadvantage. The 90-minute debate will have no audience and will be moderated by ABC News anchors. Both candidates will have two minutes to answer questions with a 2-minute rebuttal and an additional minute for follow-up. The standoff over muted microphones had initially threatened to derail the debate but was resolved after both campaigns agreed to the rules. The debate will mark the first time Harris and Trump face off since their respective campaigns.
