The highly anticipated sequel to 2019’s ‘Joker’ has premiered at the Venice Film Festival, generating much buzz. Titled ‘Joker: Folie À Deux’, the film sees Joaquin Phoenix returning as Arthur Fleck, this time joined by Lady Gaga as Harleen Quinzel. However, instead of a straightforward psychological thriller, the sequel takes a bold turn into a semi-jukebox musical, which unfortunately fails to pay off.
The story follows Arthur in Arkham Asylum, where he meets Lee and embarks on a tumultuous romance intertwined with musical numbers. As the “Trial of the Century” approaches, the film explores Arthur’s struggle with his Joker alter-ego, offering a unique perspective on the character. Despite some promising moments and visually striking musical sequences, the film ultimately falls flat due to predictable storytelling and lackluster execution.
Director Todd Phillips attempts to subvert expectations by incorporating musical elements and exploring the themes of the cult of personality and toxic fan culture. However, the decision to sideline Lady Gaga’s character and rely on cliché song choices detracts from the overall impact of the film. Joaquin Phoenix delivers a dedicated performance, but even his talent cannot rescue the film from its shortcomings.
‘Joker: Folie À Deux’ premiered at the Venice Film Festival and is set to hit theaters on 4th October. Despite its ambitious approach, the sequel fails to offer anything truly engaging or innovative, leaving audiences disappointed with its underwhelming execution.
