Russian Drones Breach Airspace of NATO Members Latvia and Romania

Romania and Latvia, both NATO members and allies of Ukraine, have recently reported incidents of Russian drones violating their airspace. Romania confirmed that a Russian drone crossed into its airspace during nighttime attacks in Ukraine, while Latvia had a drone crash in its eastern territory. The Romanian Ministry of National Defence deployed F-16 fighter jets to monitor the airspace and search for debris near the border. No casualties were reported, but both countries strongly condemned the violations by Moscow.

NATO’s outgoing deputy secretary-general and Romania’s former top diplomat, Mircea Geoana, criticized Russia’s actions as irresponsible and potentially dangerous, despite no evidence of intentional attacks against allies. The breaches in Romanian and Latvian airspace are seen as part of Russia’s aggressive actions beyond Ukraine. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for concrete action from allies, including intercepting Russian missiles and drones, providing military aid to Ukrainian warriors, and lifting restrictions on Ukraine’s use of weapons.

Poland also reported airspace violations by Russian missiles or drones attacking Ukraine. Romanian lawmakers are considering legislation to enable the shooting down of drones in peacetime. The incidents highlight the broader impact of Russia’s invasion on neighboring countries and the need for increased support for Ukraine and its allies in the region.
