Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump were seen shaking hands at a 9/11 commemoration event, shortly after sparring at a presidential debate. President Joe Biden and other political figures were also present at the event. Biden’s comment about “doing 9/11” sparked criticism from a woman who lost her husband in the attacks. The ceremony aimed to honor the 2,977 lives lost on that tragic day. After the ceremony, Trump and his running mate visited a fire station and the offices of a financial services firm that lost employees in the attacks. Harris and Biden later traveled to Shanksville, Pennsylvania for another memorial event. Trump is expected to visit the memorial site as well. The presidential candidates traditionally refrain from campaigning on the anniversary of 9/11, instead choosing to participate in memorial events. In 2020, Trump and Biden attended the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s annual commemoration in New York, while Biden also visited Shanksville. Biden made appearances at all three attack memorial sites in 2021. Trump, however, did not attend the memorial that year, opting to visit a police station and a firehouse instead. Biden attended all three of the memorial sites on the 20th anniversary of the attacks. Trump marked the anniversary with a video statement, emphasizing the importance of never forgetting the events of September 11.
