A star reporter for New York magazine, Olivia Nuzzi, has been placed on leave after admitting to a personal relationship with a former reporting subject while covering the 2024 election campaign of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The magazine stated that Nuzzi failed to disclose this relationship, which violated their standards on journalists declaring personal interests that could influence their coverage. Nuzzi apologized for not disclosing the relationship immediately and expressed regret for the violation of trust.
New York magazine conducted a review of Nuzzi’s work and found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias. Nuzzi clarified that the relationship was never physical but admitted it should have been disclosed to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest. Both CNN and the New York Times reported that the reporting subject in question was Kennedy, although his spokesperson stated that he only met Nuzzi once for an interview.
Nuzzi’s article about Kennedy, titled “The Mind-Bending Politics of RFK Jr.’s Spoiler Campaign,” was published in November 2023. Kennedy dropped out of the race last month and announced his support for Trump. Nuzzi recently conducted an interview with Trump, which was published on September 9, and the online version has been updated with a note to readers about the situation. Nuzzi is currently on leave while New York magazine conducts a more thorough third-party review of the situation.
