UN warns of escalating violence between Israel and Hezbollah that could lead to devastating conflict | Latest news on Israel-Palestine conflict

In a United Nations Security Council meeting, UN political affairs chief Rosemary DiCarlo warned that further violence between Israel and Iran-aligned groups Hamas and Hezbollah could lead to a devastating conflict. She urged diplomacy and called on member states to leverage their influence to prevent escalation. Following Israeli attacks in Lebanon, which resulted in casualties including senior Hezbollah commanders, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk stated that the attacks violated international law and could be considered a war crime. He called for a transparent investigation and accountability for those responsible.

The US Deputy Ambassador to the UN emphasized the importance of complying with international humanitarian law to minimize harm to civilians in densely populated areas. Tensions have been building in the region, with tens of thousands evacuated from homes on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border and Hezbollah firing rockets into Israel in support of Gaza. Israel has vowed to use force to protect its citizens, leading to concerns of a potential widespread conflict. The situation has created fear, panic, and horror among people in Lebanon, already suffering from an economic crisis. The UN and member states are calling for restraint and dialogue to prevent further escalation and avert a disastrous war.
