Czech citizens braved severe flooding to cast their votes in a two-day election to elect a third of the seats in the Parliament’s upper house and regional elections. Despite the challenges posed by the flooding, at least 24 lives lost, and significant damage in the region, citizens were determined to exercise their democratic right. State officials stepped in to assist in organizing the vote in areas that were hardest hit by the flooding, ensuring that citizens could still participate in the electoral process. The ruling five-party coalition led by Prime Minister Petr Fiala currently holds a clear majority in the Senate, with 27 seats up for grabs in the election. Runoff elections are scheduled to take place next week, with the Senate playing a crucial role in passing constitutional amendments and approving Constitutional Court judges. Despite the difficult circumstances, Czech citizens demonstrated their commitment to democracy by taking part in the electoral process.
