Leslie Boileau, a former Florida sheriff’s deputy, was arrested for manslaughter in connection with the accidental shooting death of his girlfriend at their home in Ocala. Boileau called 911 to report the shooting, stating that he had accidentally shot his girlfriend while handling firearms. Boileau and his girlfriend were cleaning their guns and dry-firing them when he accidentally discharged a loaded round, causing the fatal incident. The girlfriend was shot in the head and later died. Boileau was terminated from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office where he had worked for eight years. The gun used in the incident was not his work firearm. Police found physical evidence that corroborates Boileau’s account of the shooting. The Ocala Police Department described the incident as a tragic one and offered condolences to the victim’s family. Sheriff Billy Woods expressed sadness for the victim’s family and emphasized that the actions of one law enforcement officer can impact the entire law enforcement community. Boileau has been charged with manslaughter and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
