Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has agreed to participate in a second debate with former President Donald Trump, which is scheduled to take place on Oct. 23 and be hosted by CNN. Harris’ campaign chair, Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, stated that the American people deserve another opportunity to see the two candidates debate before casting their ballots, and that the format and setup would be similar to the CNN debate where Trump participated in June.
This decision comes after Harris mentioned at an event in Georgia that she was trying to secure another debate. Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, pointed to a social media post where Trump stated that there would be no third debate, as he believed it was unnecessary. Trump also expressed at a recent rally in North Carolina that another debate would be too late as voting had already begun.
The first debate between Harris and Trump took place on Sept. 10, hosted by ABC. If the Oct. 23 debate were to happen, it would occur less than two weeks before Election Day, but after early voting had already started in several states. The potential debate would provide voters with a final chance to see the two candidates face off before making their decision at the polls.
