Real Madrid has qualified automatically for the final of the first annual FIFA Intercontinental Cup in Doha, Qatar. The tournament, which will feature club teams from around the world, will culminate on December 18, coinciding with Qatar’s National Day and the two-year anniversary of the 2022 World Cup final. This competition replaces the Club World Cup and will now be played every four years with 32 teams from 2025.
The Minister for Youth and Sports in Qatar highlighted the country’s ability to host world-class sporting events, following the success of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, which was used for the 2022 World Cup, will host the final of the Intercontinental Cup.
Real Madrid, as the European Champions League winners, will headline the tournament, while other regional champions such as Al Ain, Auckland City, Al Ahly, and the South American Libertadores winners will also compete in the tournament. The winners of the matches leading up to the final will face off against Real Madrid on December 18.
The competition aims to showcase the legacy of the 2022 World Cup and provide a platform for some of the greatest players in the world to compete in a prestigious tournament. The Intercontinental Cup is set to be a global spectacle, with matches held in various locations before the final in Doha.
