Senator Raphael Warnock criticized GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson, calling him “white supremacy in blackface” and saying he is the opposite of everything Martin Luther King Jr. stood for. Warnock referenced a CNN report that Robinson made lewd comments on a pornographic website, expressed support for slavery, and referred to himself as a “black Nazi.” Robinson denies the report.
Warnock, who is the pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church where King once served, tied Robinson to former President Donald Trump, accusing Trump of supporting him for similar reasons as he did with Warnock’s opponent Herschel Walker in 2022. Trump has previously praised Robinson but has not spoken about him since the CNN report came out.
Despite pressure from allies and within his own campaign, there are no plans for Trump to drop his endorsement of Robinson. Robinson was notably absent from Trump’s recent rally in North Carolina. Trump has previously called Robinson “Martin Luther King on steroids” and claimed he is better than the civil rights leader. The situation highlights a larger pattern of Trump endorsing Black candidates without regard to their qualifications, according to Warnock.
