The Kentucky State Police (KSP) are urging drivers to be cautious as peak deer season approaches. With mating season in full swing, deer are more active and likely to wander onto roadways, increasing the risk of collisions.
KSP spokesperson, Trooper Jeremy Hodges, emphasized the importance of being vigilant while driving, especially during early morning and evening hours when deer are most active. He advised drivers to slow down and be prepared to react quickly if a deer appears on the road.
In addition to slowing down, Trooper Hodges also recommended using high beams at night to improve visibility and honking the horn if a deer is spotted near the road to scare it away. He stressed the importance of wearing seat belts and avoiding distractions while driving to ensure quick reactions in case of an unexpected encounter with a deer.
According to KSP statistics, there were over 3,000 deer-related collisions in Kentucky last year, resulting in numerous injuries and fatalities. These accidents not only pose a threat to drivers and passengers but also cause significant damage to vehicles.
KSP’s warning comes as a reminder for drivers to stay alert and take necessary precautions during peak deer season to avoid accidents and ensure their safety on the road. By staying vigilant, slowing down, and being prepared for potential encounters with deer, drivers can reduce the risk of collisions and protect themselves and their passengers from harm.
