Comedian Brittany Furlan and her husband Tommy Lee recently had a scary encounter with a coyote that tried to snatch their small dog, Neena, from their Los Angeles home. Furlan shared a surveillance video on Instagram showing the coyote grabbing Neena near the pool and running away with her. Furlan screamed and managed to rescue Neena by climbing up the wall and grabbing her out of the coyote’s mouth. Furlan expressed gratitude that Neena’s extra weight prevented the coyote from carrying her over the wall. Despite the scary incident, both Furlan and Lee were shocked but relieved that Neena was safe.
The incident took place in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, where coyotes are not uncommon. People are advised not to leave small pets unsupervised outside and to bring them indoors at night to prevent attacks. Coyotes can be attracted to trash and pet food left outside. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife states that coyotes in the state usually weigh between 10 to 35 pounds. The U.S. Forest Service estimates there are between 250,000 to 750,000 coyotes in California, and they have adapted to living alongside humans in many communities.
Furlan emphasized the importance of being vigilant about pet safety, even during the day. She warned that getting too comfortable and assuming nothing will happen can lead to dangerous situations like the one she experienced. Furlan’s message serves as a reminder to pet owners to always be cautious and protect their animals from potential threats like coyotes.
