Donald Trump’s presidential campaign has stated that if he were re-elected, his administration would support universal access to in-vitro fertilization (IVF), potentially allowing same-sex couples to receive coverage for the expensive fertility treatment. Trump has expressed support for IVF, contraception, and the rights of states to make decisions on abortion. However, his campaign did not provide specifics on how he would make universal access to IVF happen. Democratic critics have accused Trump of lying about his support for IVF and claim that his policies could effectively ban the treatment. Trump’s vice presidential pick, Sen. JD Vance, has voted against legislation to protect IVF in the past.
The Trump administration has also faced criticism for policies that discriminate against LGBTQ individuals, including a rule that ended discrimination protections for LGBTQ people and allowed adoption agencies to bar same-sex couples from adopting. In contrast, the Biden administration has reversed some of these discriminatory policies. Trump has focused on rolling back protections for transgender individuals, describing gender-affirming care for minors as “child abuse.”
As of now, only seven states require IVF benefits to include same-sex couples, and few insurance companies cover the full costs of fertility treatments, including IVF, which can be expensive. Overall, Trump’s stance on IVF and LGBTQ issues has been met with skepticism and criticism from Democrats and LGBTQ advocates.
