Russia has updated its nuclear response doctrine to address the threat of long-range attacks from Ukraine, specifying that a massive launch of enemy aerospace weapons could lead to the use of nuclear weapons. This move comes after recent attacks by Ukraine using drones to target Russian logistics hubs, destroying large amounts of ammunition and supplies.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that the use of certain weapons would put Russia at war with NATO, while Ukraine has sought to use Western-supplied weapons to counter Russian bombers dropping glide bombs on Ukrainian territory. The European Parliament has voted to lift restrictions on Ukraine’s use of Western weapons, prompting concerns of a nuclear world war from Russian officials.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of planning attacks on nuclear power plants, with the help of Chinese satellites to gather information about the facilities. Ukraine has been investing in drone technology and precision bombing techniques to counter Russian military capabilities, with plans to produce millions of drones to strengthen its defense industry.
The European Union has proposed a 35 billion euros loan to support Ukraine’s defense industry expansion, in addition to a 45 billion euros pledge from the G7. The loan aims to help Ukraine achieve its production goals by 2025 and enhance its military capabilities in response to the evolving security threats from Russia.
