University students across North American campuses have been mobilizing in solidarity with Gaza, protesting against Israel’s actions and their universities’ complicity. These protests have faced accusations of anti-Semitism and intimidation from Israel supporters in media and politics. As the new academic year begins, students are facing further intimidation from university administrations and far-right Zionist groups.
One such group, Magen Herut, is affiliated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party and aims to defend Jewish students from perceived anti-Semitism. The Jewish Defense League (JDL), a designated hate group, has also been seen at pro-Palestinian events at the University of Toronto. These groups are employing tactics used in Palestine to justify offensive aggression and colonization.
The presence of these far-right Zionist groups on campus is alarming, as they aim to fracture anti-Zionist resistance and support Western imperial expansionism. To combat this, a united front against racism and capitalism is needed. The Jewish community, in particular, should reject Zionist vigilante terrorism and strive for justice and equality for all. The rise of white supremacy, Islamophobia, and anti-Semitism in North America must be addressed, and all forms of ethnocentrism and exclusion must be challenged.
Regardless of the outcome of the upcoming US elections, the threat posed by these Zionist groups with ties to far-right violence must not be ignored. It is essential for people, including Jews, to stand against these groups and work towards a more just and inclusive society.
