Live Coverage: Middle East Crisis – 20 Dead in Gaza School Strike, IDF Soldiers Killed in Hezbollah Drone Attack

An Israeli attack on a school in central Gaza that was used to shelter displaced Palestinians resulted in the death of at least 20 people, including children. The Gaza Civil Defence Agency reported that the site was struck by artillery, killing entire families and injuring dozens more. Earlier, five children were reportedly killed by a drone strike in another part of Gaza. The European Union condemned these attacks, calling them unacceptable violations of international law.

In response to the escalating violence, Germany has reportedly blocked arms exports to Israel over concerns about how the weapons would be used. This move by the Green party ministers goes against Washington’s stance that there is no evidence of genocide being committed by Israel.

The conflict has also spread to Lebanon, where Hezbollah targeted an Israeli training base with drones, killing four soldiers. The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, has repeatedly come under attack by Israeli forces, prompting condemnation from EU foreign ministers. The US has announced plans to send an antimissile system to Israel and military personnel to operate it.

Meanwhile, the health crisis in Gaza continues to worsen, with a second polio vaccination campaign being launched after the first case of polio in 25 years was reported. The UN has warned of a dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, with reports of food and water shortages, and medical teams struggling to access the wounded. The death toll in Gaza has now reached over 42,000, with many more injured in the ongoing conflict.
