Seoul has reported that North Korea is preparing to blow up roads that cross the heavily militarized border with South Korea, following accusations from the North that South Korea sent drones over its capital, Pyongyang. South Korea’s military spokesman revealed that North Korean troops have been working covertly on the roads on their side of the border, potentially to detonate them as early as Monday. The North accused South Korea of a political and military provocation by flying drones over Pyongyang, prompting fiery responses from Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who blamed Seoul and Washington for the drone intrusion. North Korea has threatened to cut off all roads and railways connecting to South Korea and has placed fully armed artillery units at the border on standby. South Korea has been silent on the drone issue, as they believe it is a tactic by Pyongyang to fabricate excuses for provocations. North Korea has also reintroduced heavy weapons into the Demilitarized Zone border buffer and restored guard posts, following the breakdown of a 2018 military agreement aimed at easing tensions. The two Koreas, which are technically still at war, have maintained cross-border links as symbols of past rapprochement efforts, including a 2018 summit where they declared a new era of peace.
