The Israeli military is investigating the possibility that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was among three militants killed during operations in Gaza, which would be a major coup for Israel. Sinwar had taken over as Hamas’ political head following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh and was involved in governing Gaza. The Israeli Defense Forces and Israel Security Agency stated that at least three militants were killed in a building, with the possibility that Sinwar was among them. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant expressed determination to eliminate enemies, while the U.S. was aware of reports regarding Sinwar’s death. Sinwar, born in the 1960s in a Gaza refugee camp, had a history of involvement in Hamas and had been previously imprisoned for plotting attacks against Israel. The Oct. 7 terror attack that Sinwar was accused of orchestrating resulted in many casualties, including hostages taken into Gaza. Families of the hostages expressed hope that Sinwar’s reported death would lead to an end to the conflict and the release of the remaining captives. The conflict in Gaza has resulted in thousands of deaths over the years, with the recent escalation following the Oct. 7 attacks. The situation is still developing, and updates are expected.
