Substitute teacher in Minnesota allegedly re-enacts George Floyd’s murder and makes racially offensive remarks in classroom

An off-duty Wisconsin police officer who was working as a substitute teacher at Woodbury High School in Minnesota is under investigation for re-enacting the murder of George Floyd, making racially harmful comments, and physically harming a student during English classes. The officer, Steve Williams, was removed from the classroom and placed on administrative leave by the Prescott Police Department. School officials described the re-enactment of Floyd’s murder as reprehensible and indicated that the reported actions will not be tolerated. Williams is accused of making racially harmful comments, telling sexist jokes, describing disturbing details of dead bodies he had seen, sharing explicit information about sexual assault cases, talking about his gun collection, and making inappropriate remarks about police brutality. Students reported that Williams twisted a student’s arm, showed pressure points, and mimicked holding up a gun during class. The staffing agency that placed Williams at the school stated that he no longer worked for them and acknowledged that his actions were unacceptable. The incident has been reported to the Minnesota Department of Education and the state Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board for further investigation. Woodbury Public Safety is working with the school district to look into the matter and ensure that students are supported. The community has expressed concern and has emphasized that such behavior will not be tolerated in Woodbury High School or South Washington County Schools.
