The Defence Ministers of the G7 countries have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine in the face of escalating conflict, as well as addressing security challenges in a world marked by great instability. The joint statement came after a meeting in Naples, Italy, where ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States expressed their solidarity with Ukraine and their intention to continue providing military assistance in the short and long term.
Italy’s Defence Minister highlighted the deteriorated security framework in various regions, including the Middle East, Africa, and the Indo-Pacific. The ministers also condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine and expressed concern over Iran’s ballistic missiles and attacks against Israel. They emphasized the importance of international law and the security of peacekeepers in Lebanon.
The meeting also addressed security issues in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region, with discussions on UNIFIL’s security in Lebanon and the need for all parties to act in line with international law. The G7 countries, including Italy, the US, Canada, Japan, Britain, Germany, and France, reiterated their commitment to upholding international law and democracy in the face of threats.
Italy, which holds the rotating chairmanship of the G7 in 2024, will continue to work with its allies to address security challenges and support Ukraine in the midst of ongoing conflict. The ministers’ declaration highlighted their unwavering support for Ukraine and their shared determination to address global security challenges in a time of unprecedented instability.
