Police in Tempe, Arizona have arrested a 60-year-old man named Jeffrey Michael Kelly for allegedly shooting at a Democratic National Committee office over the past two months. He has been charged with several felonies, including unlawful discharge of a firearm and committing an act of terrorism, as well as misdemeanors. Kelly is also accused of hanging bags of suspicious white powder lined with razor blades from political signs in a nearby village.
The DNC office impacted by the shootings houses staff for Vice President Kamala Harris, the state Democratic Party, and House and Senate candidates. Police believe the suspect targeted the office in multiple incidents, including one where what appeared to be gunshots were noticed through the front windows.
Arizona is a battleground state, with both Harris and former President Donald Trump campaigning to win its support in the upcoming election. Police in Tempe will provide more information about the suspect during a press conference on Wednesday. The DNC has not yet commented on the incident.
Kelly’s motives for the attacks are not yet clear, but his actions have raised concerns about political violence and safety in the area. This arrest highlights the potential dangers surrounding the current political climate and the need for increased security measures to protect political offices and staff members.
