Kentucky state Sen. Johnnie Turner tragically passed away after accidentally driving his lawn mower into an empty swimming pool on his property. The incident occurred at Turner’s home in Harlan County on Friday evening.
Turner, who was 75 years old, had been mowing his lawn when he lost control of the mower and went over the edge of the pool, which was reportedly empty at the time. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but Turner was pronounced dead at the scene. The Harlan County Coroner’s Office has ruled the death as accidental.
Turner had been serving in the Kentucky state Senate since 2007. He was a Democrat representing the 29th District, which includes Letcher, Harlan, and Pike counties. Prior to his time in the Senate, Turner had served in the Kentucky House of Representatives for eight years.
Colleagues and friends of Turner have expressed shock and sadness at his sudden passing. Senate President Robert Stivers described Turner as a dedicated public servant who was committed to improving the lives of those in his district.
Turner’s death has left a void in the Kentucky Senate, and his colleagues are mourning the loss of a respected lawmaker. Senate Minority Leader Morgan McGarvey praised Turner for his dedication to his constituents and his passion for public service.
Funeral arrangements for Turner have not yet been announced. He is survived by his wife, two children, and several grandchildren. The Kentucky state Senate has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor of Turner’s memory.
