Ukraine urges North Korean soldiers to surrender, offering safety, food, and medical care.

The project “I Want to Live” launched by Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence has released a new video in Korean, calling on North Korean soldiers to surrender to Ukrainian forces as the first Pyongyang troops arrive in the combat zone in Russia’s Kursk region. The video showcases Ukrainian POW camps and promises safe conditions of detention, food, and medical care in compliance with the Geneva Conventions.

Since its launch in September 2022, the project has helped over 300 Russian soldiers surrender to Ukrainian captivity, with some expressing a desire to join Ukrainian security and defense forces. The initiative aims to provide a way for military personnel to avoid participating in Russia’s war of aggression and potential future legal issues.

North Korean citizens, who lack internet access and are restricted in their use of smartphones, may find it challenging to reach the “I Want to Live” project website, which has been banned in Russia but can still be accessed using a VPN or messengers. The video message to Pyongyang soldiers emphasizes the importance of avoiding senseless deaths in a foreign land and echoes the fate of Russian soldiers who will never return home.

As tensions rise in the region, Ukraine’s call to North Korean soldiers reflects a broader effort to offer a humane alternative to those caught in the conflict, regardless of nationality, religion, or ideological views. The project continues to provide a channel for surrender to those seeking a way out of participation in the war.
