The Hoover Institution Program on the US, China, and the World is hosting an event titled “Critical Issues in the US-China Science and Technology Relationship” on Thursday, November 7th, 2024. The event will take place from 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm PT at the Annenberg Conference Room in the George P. Shultz Building.
Both the United States and China prioritize maintaining leadership in science and technology for national and economic security. However, actions taken to promote indigenous innovation and protect science and technology ecosystems have led to challenges, especially for Chinese American scientists. The event will feature a panel of distinguished scientists and China scholars discussing these dynamics and their implications.
Speakers at the event include Zhenan Bao, a professor at Stanford University known for her work on artificial electronic skin, Yasheng Huang, a professor at MIT Sloan School of Management and president of the Asian American Scholar Forum, and Peter F. Michelson, a professor at Stanford University specializing in physics and observations of the Universe.
The event will be moderated by Frances Hisgen, senior research program manager at the Hoover Institution, who focuses on enhancing the security and integrity of the US research enterprise while aligning with democratic values and promoting civil rights. Glenn Tiffert, a historian of modern China, will also be participating in the event.
The discussion will cover topics such as US-China science and technology collaboration, challenges facing Chinese American scientists, and fostering scientific ecosystems that align with democratic values. This event promises to be an insightful discussion on critical issues in the US-China science and technology relationship.
