Edward Kelley, a Donald Trump supporter, has been linked to a murder plot against FBI agents investigating him for involvement in the January 6 Capitol riots. He was armed when he breached the Capitol and may have been wearing a gun holster, according to prosecutors. Kelley faces an array of charges related to the riots, including civil disorder, assaulting officers, and destruction of government property.
He is also facing separate charges related to the murder plot, where he allegedly conspired to kill FBI employees. Kelley’s defense team did not present any witnesses during his trial, and he declined to testify himself. Prosecutors presented strong evidence that Kelley was armed on January 6, as he was seen wearing a gun holster and an ammo pack.
Kelley was at the forefront of the mob that breached the Capitol and was captured in selfies inside the Senate chamber. He encouraged his wife to download an encrypted app and expressed doubts about the “fake news.” Prosecutors argued that someone needed to be held accountable for breaching the Capitol for the first time since 1814.
More than 1,500 people have been charged in connection with the January 6 attack, with over 1,100 convictions secured. Kelley’s trial shed light on the armed nature of some of the rioters, despite claims that they were unarmed. The case highlights the ongoing legal repercussions facing those involved in the Capitol riots.
