Raymond Childs III, a 21-year-old man from Indianapolis, was found guilty of murdering five people, including family members and a pregnant woman, in a shooting incident that occurred in January 2021. Childs was also convicted of attempted murder and carrying a handgun without a license. The killings were the result of an argument over Childs staying out late, and he went room to room shooting the victims, killing his father, stepmother, sister, brother, and brother’s girlfriend, who was pregnant. Childs’ 15-year-old brother survived after fleeing the house during the attack.
After a mistrial in his first trial, Childs was convicted following a five-day trial and three hours of jury deliberation. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears expressed satisfaction with the verdict, saying it provided justice for the victims and their families. Childs is now facing sentencing, and could receive between 40 to 65 years in prison for each murder count, 20 to 40 years for the attempted murder charge, and one to six years for the handgun charge. The verdict comes after a difficult journey for the victims’ families, with Mears commending the trial team, law enforcement, and witnesses for their dedication to seeking justice. Childs’ sentencing is scheduled for January 7, and his attorney has not yet commented on the conviction.
