Officials believe that the fires at ballot drop boxes in Oregon and Washington are connected

Authorities in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, are investigating incidents in which ballot drop boxes were set on fire just days before the election. An identical Volvo was spotted at both scenes, and the use of an incendiary device was similar in nature. The Portland Police Bureau described the act as targeted and intentional. Three ballots were damaged in Portland, while potentially hundreds were affected in Vancouver. The Multnomah County Elections Division reassured voters that their votes will be counted, as fire suppressant protected most of the ballots in the affected box.

Police responded to reports of fires at the ballot boxes in both cities early in the morning. The FBI is investigating the incidents, and authorities have not yet determined a motive. Election officials across the country have been on high alert, as concerns about disruptions to voting and vote counting have increased. Vancouver previously had a suspicious device reported near another ballot box, but it was safely removed. Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Republican challenger Joe Kent are in a competitive House race in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District.

Both candidates have called for increased security around ballot drop boxes to ensure the safety of voters’ ballots leading up to Election Day. A suspect was arrested in Phoenix last week after a U.S. Postal Service mailbox was set on fire, damaging several ballots. The suspect admitted to arson but claimed it was not politically motivated. Erik Ortiz and Andrew Blankstein are reporters for NBC News who have been covering these incidents of potential voter suppression and vandalism.
