Kentucky voters will have an important decision to make on Election Day regarding Constitutional Amendment 1, which aims to clarify that only citizens of the United States can vote in the state. The amendment, supported by Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams, seeks to prohibit non-citizens from voting in all elections, including local ones. Currently, while federal elections already have this restriction in place, at least 18 localities in Kentucky allow legal non-citizens to vote in local elections. If passed, Amendment 1 would explicitly state in the constitution that only citizens can vote, aligning Kentucky with seven other states that have a similar measure.
The amendment has sparked debate, with former state Rep. Attica Scott expressing concerns about potential enforcement issues and the potential for stirring up hate. However, Adams and supporters of the amendment argue that it is a necessary preventative measure to ensure that only citizens can participate in the voting process without risking any litigations over the issue.
In addition to Amendment 1, Kentucky voters also have another amendment on the ballot to consider. With early voting turnout already showing a significant increase from previous years, all eyes are on Election Day when voters will make their decision on these important issues.
