On Tuesday, Resident Medical Officer S. Saravanan and Head of the Department of Neurology P.K. Murugan spoke at an awareness programme for World Strokes Day at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. Dr. Murugan highlighted the increasing rate of stroke in young people due to lifestyle factors such as unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, and sleep disorders, all of which contribute to a sedentary lifestyle. He emphasized the importance of alteplase, a clot-dissolving drug that can significantly improve recovery outcomes if administered within 4.5 hours of symptom onset. Dr. Saravanan stressed the importance of regular exercise, especially in the morning, to prevent non-communicable diseases like stroke. He also mentioned the benefits of physical exercise and reading in improving sleep, which can help prevent conditions like diabetes and obesity. Dr. Saravanan emphasized that strokes do not occur suddenly and that there are warning signs, so taking precautionary steps such as exercise and a healthy lifestyle can help prevent strokes. The event aimed to raise awareness about stroke prevention and the importance of a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of this life-threatening condition.
