Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky has called on all residents to participate in the second annual “Buckle Up, Phone Down Day” in an effort to reduce distracted driving and improve highway safety. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Office of Highway Safety reports that distracted driving has become a major cause of vehicle crashes in the state, resulting in over 40,000 crashes, 11,000 injuries, and 150 deaths each year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warns that texting and using a phone while driving is particularly dangerous as it involves visual, manual, and cognitive distractions all at once. Governor Beshear is urging Kentuckians to take two simple actions – buckle up and put down their phones while driving – to help prevent accidents and save lives on the roads. This initiative comes as part of ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and promote safe driving practices in the state. Residents are encouraged to join the campaign and make a commitment to prioritize safety behind the wheel. The governor’s message underscores the importance of responsible driving habits and the shared responsibility of all motorists to contribute to a safer driving environment for everyone.
