Opinion – Gex Williams: Amendment 2 will help Kentucky schools align with national standards

Senator Gex Williams, a supporter of education choice for parents, has responded to a recent editorial by Al Cross opposing an amendment on the topic. Williams highlights evidence that education choice improves student performance, citing a study by the Progressive Policy Institute. The study found that cities with high rates of charter school enrollment have seen improvements in student performance, particularly among low-income students.

Williams also addresses claims made by Cross regarding teacher pay in Kentucky, arguing that states with higher teacher salaries often have some form of educational choice. Williams emphasizes the importance of Amendment 2 in allowing the General Assembly to use legislative processes to catch up with other states in terms of education innovation and tap into additional federal funds.

The General Assembly has previously attempted to implement tax credit scholarships and charter school legislation, which were either struck down as unconstitutional or suspended by litigation. Williams asserts that Amendment 2 would provide much-needed educational improvements for children in underperforming schools in Kentucky, allowing parents to choose the best educational options for their child.

Williams urges voters to support Amendment 2 to spark positive changes in education and provide students with the opportunities they deserve. The Senator represents Kentucky’s 20th district and calls on others to join in voting “yes” on the amendment.
