A Georgetown woman is speaking out after her neighbor shot her cat, claiming it was a nuisance on his property. Kristin Brandenburg’s 12-year-old cat, ‘Gray Baby’, was shot by her neighbor, Christopher Jones, who admitted to the shooting. Jones believed he was acting lawfully in shooting the cat because it was on his property and causing a nuisance. Brandenburg rushed her cat to the vet, but ultimately had to put him down due to his injuries.
The incident has left Brandenburg shocked and fearful for her other animals, including her two dogs. Jones has since been charged with torture of a dog or cat and is set to be arraigned in Scott County District Court on November 14th. Brandenburg’s attorney, Jacqueline Mayer, believes that this case is a clear example of a violent act and plans to use Ethan’s Law, a Kentucky law that makes the torture of a dog or cat a felony, in this case.
Ethan’s Law just took effect in July and this will be one of the first cases in the state to use it. Brandenburg’s case will be the first in Scott County and Jeff Callaway, the owner of Ethan, after whom the law is named, is closely following the proceedings to ensure that justice is served. Callaway emphasizes that shooting a cat should never be considered a solution and there are much better ways to handle such situations. Brandenburg is seeking justice for her beloved pet and hopes that this case will set a precedent for future incidents involving animal cruelty.
