The recent cold spell in Kentucky has brought temperatures below zero, with windchill readings as low as 15 below zero. January has been significantly colder than usual, with temperatures nearly 10 degrees below normal. Shane Holinde from Kentucky Mesonet and Ky Climate Center recalls past extreme cold snaps in the region, such as the one in January 1985 when temperatures dropped below zero for two nights and wind chills reached as low as -30. Another notable event was the cold and snowy wave in January 1994, which brought historic snowfall and led to the coldest temperature ever recorded in Kentucky, -37 degrees in Shelbyville. In Bowling Green, the coldest temperature on record is -26 degrees. These extreme weather events serve as a reminder of the harsh winter conditions that can occur in the region.
