Trump considers overhauling or eliminating FEMA during North Carolina hurricane damage tour

President Donald Trump has suggested overhauling or even eliminating the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) during a visit to North Carolina to assess the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Trump claimed that FEMA has let the country down and that the agency was not efficient in responding to disasters. He proposed taking over the aid distribution process instead of going through FEMA, suggesting a more direct approach. The president also voiced support for letting states take the lead in disaster response, believing it would be more cost-effective and efficient.

Even though Trump expressed his desire to eliminate FEMA, he would need Congress to give him the authority to do so under the Presidential Reorganization Act, similar to what Reagan received during his administration. However, it is unclear if Trump will seek support from Congress for such authority. Trump has a history of questioning FEMA’s effectiveness, spreading misinformation about the agency, and criticizing their response to disasters.

During a recent trip to California following destructive wildfires, Trump reiterated his threat to withhold federal aid unless the state meets his demands regarding water management and voter ID laws. Despite the fact that FEMA works alongside state and local partners in disaster response, Trump has previously attempted to blame Democrats for mismanagement of funds within the agency and continues to push his political agenda in the aftermath of natural disasters.
