Lexington’s 250th Anniversary Celebrated with Basketball Week

The city of Lexington is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year with a year-long series of events to honor its rich history. One of the highlighted events is Lexington Basketball Week, taking place from January 25 to February 1. The week will feature a celebration of basketball, a sport that Mayor Linda Gorton describes as a tradition of winning and excellence in the Commonwealth.

Kentucky men’s and women’s head coaches, Mark Pope and Kenny Brooks, along with high school coaches, gathered at Memorial Coliseum to kick off the festivities. Throughout the week, high school and college basketball games will be spotlighted, along with special attractions and giveaways to draw attendance. Former players from all levels will also be recognized.

The highlight of the week will be the Kentucky men’s basketball team’s matchup against Arkansas on February 1. An exciting game as former head coach John Calipari returns to Lexington with the Razorbacks. The city is encouraging residents to follow their social media accounts and website for more information on the events planned for the week.

This celebration of basketball is long overdue for a city like Lexington, says Mayor Gorton. The city, known for its love of basketball, is excited to finally get the ball rolling on a series of events that will highlight not only the sport but the city’s passion for it. With a packed schedule of games and festivities planned, Lexington Basketball Week is set to be an unforgettable celebration.
