Trump authorizes termination of federal employees in DEI roles

The Trump administration is moving quickly to terminate federal employees in diversity, equity, and inclusion roles. The Office of Personnel Management directed agency heads to eliminate these offices and positions within 60 days, although the exact number of affected workers is still unknown. The administration is accelerating its plans from earlier directives and agencies are being urged to start issuing layoff notices to employees in DEI roles. Workers have been warned of adverse consequences if they do not comply with efforts to shut down DEI initiatives. Trump recently signed an executive order ending what he referred to as wasteful DEI programs in federal agencies.

In response to these directives, government agencies have begun removing diversity-related content from their websites and dissolving DEI-focused councils. The Department of Homeland Security and the Education Department, among others, have taken down DEI pages and materials. The National Gallery of Art also closed an office dedicated to inclusion and belonging in reaction to Trump’s orders.

Overall, the Trump administration’s crackdown on diversity initiatives aims to end what they perceive as government efforts to socially engineer race and gender into public and private life. Workers in DEI roles in the federal government are facing uncertainty and potential job loss as agencies move quickly to comply with the directives from the White House.
