Google reverses DEI initiatives, including targets for hiring

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has removed mention of “diversity, equity, and inclusion” from its annual report to the Securities and Exchange Commission and ended hiring goals for representation. This move comes as a response to the Trump administration’s targeting of DEI policies within the federal government.

In its 10-K report to the SEC, Alphabet removed language from the previous year that highlighted its commitment to DEI and representative workforce growth. Google has stated that it is evaluating changes required following recent court decisions and executive orders on this topic.

Google has updated its diversity website and changed the title of its Chief Diversity Officer to VP, People Operations. The company will no longer have aspirational hiring goals tied to representation but will continue to support Employee Resource Groups that cater to various communities within the company.

This decision to scale back DEI policies follows a trend among U.S. companies in recent months to pare down their programs in response to criticism and the changing political landscape. Other companies, such as Costco and Delta Air Lines, have stated that they will continue their DEI practices despite the shifting environment.
